I wanted to focus on something that continues to affect our lives today, more than two years after it began. The Covid-19 pandemic is something that completely changed the way of life for everyone around the world. Arguably, one the largest changes was the inclusion of wearing masks to prevent cases from spreading and increasing. Although there has been a lot of controversy between whether mandates should be in place, it is undeniable that masks do help decrease the likelihood of catching Coronavirus not only yourself, but others catching and spreading it as well. Wearing a mask very quickly became something that everyone would do and continue to do in order to help prevent the spread, it would become a communal effort to protect one’s body and everyone around as well. This gave me the idea of creating a communal mask made up of multiple masks in order to demonstrate the aspect of protecting everyone’s health. Although we individually wear masks, a community effort to do so allowed for everyone to provide protection for each other’s bodies. My Communal Facial Mask is made up of different masks, each having a sort of individuality to represent different individuals who make up the whole effort. In a way, the size of the mask allows for a physical barrier as well, like a shield. The threads that sew them together further represent the joint effort for everyone to protect each other. My intention with my piece is that people interact with it and take the time to touch it and feel the textures of each fabric and the seams that bind them, utilizing our senses, and bring a sense of humor with its size. With my Communal Facial Mask I hope that people are able to see how as humans, we still care about each other and try to help one another.
