My piece, Mom’s Garden, is a sculpture of the wooden chair in our backyard, surrounded by flowers in my Mom’s garden. I wanted to create a semi-realistic representation while also introducing some imaginary aspects, such as the leaves growing out of the chair, and the bright color of the chair itself. Every Spring, the flowers in my mom’s garden begin to bloom, giving color to the whole garden. I wanted to represent Springtime and the multitude of flowers and plants it brings as a result in my piece. The whole piece is made of cardboard, layered with paper that allows for the use of colors. The hardest part of this project was creating the chair as it had many folds and angles that were difficult to bind together. I wanted to remain faithful to the original design of the chair since it is representative of the place I was trying to convey. The ground is also layered with brown paper bags that were crushed in order to create a texture along the surface. Overall, Mom’s Garden was made to commemorate and represent something meaningful to me and a reminder of the life that Springtime brings to my Mom’s Garden.
