My jacket is crafted from the pieces of clothing I had worn in the past, sewn onto the fabric by both machine and by hand. The colors are arranged into the pattern of a pride flag as a representation of my own identity. There is symbolism in the shape of the star on the left front pocket, in front of the heart. The star is representative of hope, dreams, and renewal, something I wanted to include as a sign of renewing my own identity and realizing who I am and what I feel in my heart. I also included a statement along the back of the jacket, stating, “I am not just one.” I felt that this quote provided a good statement of how I personally believe that our identities are made up of multiple aspects of ourselves. “I am not just one,” allows for the viewer and wearer to think about the ways in which their own identity is made up. The transformation of this jacket into a reflection of my own identity helped me realize the importance of why identity continues to be an important aspect of both understanding ourselves, but also finding how we may relate to each other.
